Holi in Jaipur

Holi, the Festival of Colours, is celebrated in the month of Phalgun on a full moon day, according to the lunar calendar and usually falls in the month of March. Phalgun is the month of spring in India. This year the festival of colors will be celebrated on March07 and 08, 2012. Holi is thus celebrated to mark the end of winter chill and the onset of summer. At this time, nature itself is also in full bloom; the flowers of India present a sight to behold.

Traditionally, vegetable dyes have been used for colour, both dry and wet. Called Gulal and Abeer, the dry color is applied directly while wet colour is mixed in buckets full of water, in which friends are dunked. Accompanied by the sound of ‘Dhol’ (an Indian percussion instrument) and plenty of singing and dancing, Holi is the festival of merrymaking.

What is a festival without celebratory food? Holi also has certain special sweet and savoury dishes associated with it. Gujiya, Mathri and Papri is made especially for the occasion. Traditionally, consumption of intoxicating bhang is associated with the festival of Holi. Bhang can be consumed in the form of Thandai, a sweet drink or mixed inside the eatables. It is so much fun to watch the otherwise sober people making a clown of themselves in public.

Holi is also considered to be the day of friendship, when in keeping with the spirit of the day, people forget petty enmities and renew their friendship.

In Jaipur, Holi is the day for Elephant Festival on March07, involving elephant sports and noisy parades, music, folk theatre and dance performances…. The next day, mobs of people flood the streets, playing cymbals and singing songs. The merrymaking and riot of colors goes on till early afternoon. After some rest and cleaning up, evening is again the time to catch up with friends or to enjoy a performance.

You can also be a part of, and enjoy the galore of this colorful festival at Hotel Arya Niwas, Jaipur. Every Year a fabulous arrangement of the holi celebration is made at the hotel’s front garden premises. The rainbow of colors, streaking radiantly happy faces dancing people and a huge variety of festival cuisines are offered to experience on this fun filled day. Here we invite Rajasthani folk musicians and dancers, who encourage our guests to dance with them and enjoy!

Venturing on streets for longer time or alone might greet you with over-friendly people, so refrain from it.

A Virtual Tour to the Blushing Pink City!

Walking through the streets of Jaipur City is a pleasure that people often describe at great lengths in their travelogues. Still, a large number of visitors miss just that. For they are not aware that the city of Jaipur with its residential quarters is as worthy to be seen as its incomparable uncountable monuments. There is still confusion in policy makers whether to call Jaipur a heritage city or a city of heritages – it has the best of both. The way people perform their crafts and sell commodities from the shops lined up on both sides of the streets and lanes is extremely photogenic, as if it is an artificial scene created for tourists. But the fact is that it is business as usual, and as always.

Jaipur is an extremely well proportioned city, quite unusual among other historic Indian Cities, planned to the minutest detail and to the smallest structure. Serving as thoroughfares for the ever important processions, the wide and straight main streets have uniform sized and shaped shops on both sides with no residential quarters opening up on them. Only the temples open up on main streets. The rectangular blocks made by intersections of the main streets have the residential mansions known as havelis opening up on shadowy smaller streets known as rastas and galis, each one having its characteristic names. The names of the lanes (for instance, Khazane walon ka rasta, Maniharon ka rasta, Topkhane ka rasta, Lalji Saand ka rasta, Jat ke Kuen ka rasta, Dinanathji ki gali…) are so interesting and inviting, it becomes worthwhile to explore each one. These lanes have a judicious mix of public wells, temples of different deities, chaurahas (crossroads), chowks (squares) and shops of various artisans where they manufacture and sell at the same spot. The huge squares of main streets, known as chaupers, are conveniently located so that they can be easily reached from any of the massive gates of this walled city. They are the ideal places to glimpse the entire gamut of social activity which changes every hour of the day.

This ever-prosperous trade center has no dearth of modern flavors added to it. Besides its many amusement parks, Jaipur has the most lavish cinema theatreRajmandir, the very impressive Birla Convention Center, a number of clubs, golf course and Polo grounds. The opulence-personified Rambagh Palace and the luxury-personified Rajvilaas are two of the world’s best hotel resorts that Jaipur proudly has, among many others. A number of impressive havelis of noblemen in Jaipur Royal family are now tasteful heritage hotels. If everything else fails to impress you, Jaipur’s bazaars will not, Don't forget your credit card back home!as they make this city a shopper’s ultimate delight. Those not interested in shopping, can see how the crafts are made – in Jaipur itself or in the nearby Sanganer and Bagru towns.

Come to Jaipur anytime and you are welcomed with its touch of class. Come for any reasons. For its mouthwatering delicacies offered at street sides to classy restaurants… to participate in its uncountable processions and festivities… to join its many music and dance schools… for top-notch excursions around the city… to just shop till you drop…  to spend some moments of regality in palaces, pomp, show and mock weddings…

Jaipur was painted pink in honor of a British Prince visiting this city, hence its name Pink City. The city still blushes pink in honor of its guests.

Chitra Cafeteria: Where Health is Served in Fresh and Flavorful Cuisines!

Quite unlike a normal hotel restaurant, there are several unique features that make Chitra Cafetaria a popular choice with our guests as well as the locals.

Chitra Cafeteria, Jaipur offers a warm and cozy ambience where you can dine in a relaxed and comfortable manner. The soothing lights, coupled with the neutral colors of the walls  make it one of the most elegant restaurants of the city. Chitra Cafeteria is a self-service restaurant, which can accommodate a maximum of 75 people.  Here, the guests can enjoy lazy breakfasts, lunches and dinners in our long, languid verandah that opens up to the Sun and its warmth but if you would like to eat privately, there is formal dining, adding to the majestic experience of eating like royalty as well!

Visitors can see their food being prepared and served since the kitchen and the dining area is not separated by any wall or door. Chitra Cafeteria in Jaipur specializes in continental and North Indian food. Less oil and fewer chilis are used to prepare the gourmet delights. We believe in providing hygienic food to the guests. Moreover, a lot of emphasis is also paid to clean and good quality food. We aim to provide fresh, home-like food made under strict supervision of the ladies of the family. Chitra ji herself gave a 1.5 hour long Indian cooking demonstration at Chitra Cafe, a few months back. It was on special request of an interested group of travelers. The dishes prepared were Baigan Masala, Baigan Bharta, Palak Paneer, Roti, Paratha, and Plain/Cheese Naan.

Visual Menu is a unique feature of Chitra Cafetaria – All available dishes for the day are put on display, which means you know the portion size as well as the product that you will be getting, no surprises and guess work required as you try to decipher the menu as in a regular restaurant.

Chemicals are a Noxious substances from which modern foods are made, but we serve you a complete health. We make our own bread, jams, cakes and other bakery products without using any chemical additives. The honey used comes from the Litchi fruit orchards of the Himalayan foothills. Fresh salads, using organic vegetables whenever possible; availability of seasonal Indian vegetables and not just the regular curries, authentic Italian pasta are some of the things that make food at the Chitra Café a delightful experience.

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet”. If you hanker for vegetarian fare with a home cooked aroma head for the Chitra Cafe . . . . . because one can come day in, day out, to savor the tasty fare, suffer no guilt pangs about calories, nor survive on Digene doses; all that while being easy on your pocket . . . .
